AP Photo Michael Probst15:09 27.03.2015(updated 15:47 27.03.2015) Get short URLFriday’s trading sessions were choppy across the globe, dominated by local factors and determinants chiefly ahead of Janet Yellen’s speech later during the day, possibly shedding some light of the next Fed moves and timing.Kristian Rouz — The outburst of the Saudi-led military operation in Yemen dropped off the investors’ radar amidst gains in European shares and signals from Washington confirming indirectly that US monetary policy will drift towards more expensive borrowing costs soon, pushing the US dollar higher. Consequently, crude oil slipped roughly 1% on Friday, and market volatility decreased significantly in the US due to more stable economic growth. In Asia, many investors and traders were playing against the market, selling off equities after yesterday’s rally across several sectors, resulting in an overall retreat in stocks. Europe posted insignificant gains, putting an end to the two-day losses, but markets worldwide are awaiting new policy moves from monetary regulators, suggesting the future pace of expansion in the world’s biggest economies. ? Flickr Chris PotterUS Fed Facing Guild Hall Dilemma as Corporate America Yearns for Weaker GreenbackStock markets in Asia-Pacific retreated on Friday with Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index dropping to its 1-week lowest as market participants were cashing their gains of the previous several days. Hedge funds made good money through a big sell-off in the recently risen stock futures. The Nikkei Index shed 1.3%, falling to its lowest since 16 March after having hit its 15-year highest this past Monday. The broader Topix Index also retreated 1%. Trading volumes were high, with some 100,000 contracts signed. This past week, the Nikkei retreated 1.4%, effectively putting an end to its 6-week streak of gains. However, a stronger dollar may suggest the decline in Japanese stocks is only temporary. The market is still bullish as corporate earnings are high, along with shareholder returns. Stocks in Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong and Malaysia retreated only slightly, as Friday was dominated by the anticipation of the US Fed chair Janet Yellen’s speech later in the day. In Europe, stocks posted their greatest weekly losses since the year’s start, however, most markets ended Friday’s trading in the green. As the Middle Eastern tensions have become yesterday’s news, obviously lacking any serious global impact even in oil prices, and the euro dropped again as a result of the ECB easing, stocks gained supported by a solid economic growth in the Eurozone. The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 Index added 0.2%, while the German DAX inched 0.1% up, along with the French CAC 40. In London, however, the FTSE Index dropped 0.6%, an aftereffect of yesterday’s Dubai-inflicted shock to the London Stock Exchange. The euro retreated to $1.08, helping stocks. European shares are now under pressure, however, as bond yields in several periphery nations rose unexpectedly, suggesting the situation in the real economy is becoming riskier on Europe’s outskirts. In Italy and Portugal, bond yields posted a second straight week of gains, suggesting less economic efficiency and greater volatility in these nations. ? REUTERS Brendan McDermid Global Stocks Extend Losses on Yemeni Risks, Oil AdvancingThe Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk’s stock jumped 13% Friday, contributing to the overall markets’ optimism, after the company announced it will bring to America’s market their new insulin medicine. In the US, WTI crude fell to $50.40 bbl after having surged 4.5% the day before on the Yemeni news. Brent crude fell to $58.14 bbl. The S&P 500 Index retreated 0.2% in New York, hovering just above its 100-day average. As the US stocks are becoming more stable and predictable in the absence of any breakthrough policy decision from the Fed, so does US economic growth. The S&P 500 volatility index has stabilized at about 15% in March, its lowest since August 2012. The CBOE Volatility index (VIX) ended this week at roughly 13%. VIX is directly linked to the estimated risks to the real economy. All the aforementioned means there is little or no risk of a recession in the US, while America’s financial sector is also becoming a less risky business, and the overall situation is more normal now, suggesting yet another reason for the Fed to move toward normality in base interest rates. A lower VIX, as it is now, usually benefits stocks, because you would want to put your money in a sure thing, not in a volatile mire of living uncertainly. Now, VIX was at its lowest in 2004-2006, the period the US Fed hiked interest rate more than 15 times. That’s a straight signal — US borrowing will be costlier soon, hence the renewed advance in the dollar FX rate.

is in peril once the U.S. embargo lifts. “We’re still in 1959

Travel to Cuba, before U.S. sanctions lift – CNNHavana, Cuba (CNN)Cuba is not like other places, or rather, not like anywhere that exists today. To some outsiders, it looks firmly stuck in the 1950s. Vintage cars roam the streets, the landscape is absent of strip malls and global chains, and the buildings — though crumbling — hark back to a grander time. It is these throwbacks that lend Havana, the country’s capital, an undeniable charm. A charm that, some worry, is in peril once the U.S. embargo lifts. "We’re still in 1959, that’s the beauty of the city, and eventually all of this is going to change," says Hugo Cancio, a Cuban-American entrepreneur and president of Fuego Media Group. Sparking a cigar revivalRight now, entrepreneurs like Cancio are waiting to see how an opening of relations with the U.S. will affect not just the architecture of the country, but the businesses that already exist. How, for instance, would a sudden influx of demand for Cuban products influence, say, Cuba’s cigar industry? In the 1990s, demand for Cuban cigars soared, and the result was a lower-quality stogie. Cuban tobacco companies are loathe to make the same mistake twice."I can’t produce more (cigars) because the land is not so big," notes renowned cigar-maker Hirochi Robaina."I’d rather produce the same, but with better quality." Currently, Robaina Family Farm makes between four to five million cigars each year — not enough to satisfy the U.S. market. If they won’t produce more, that means the price for Cuban cigars will likely soar. The Connection film review – GQ.co Rex The Connection is 2015’s most stylish gangster film By Helen O Hara 08 June 15 One of the landmarks of Seventies film saw Gene Hackman in a porkpie hat tracking The French Connection all over New York. Hackman’s Popeye Doyle may have found his man, but he did not sever the United States’ link to the drugs coming out of Marseilles in massive quantities. In the late Sixties and Seventies, the French port saw tons of raw Turkish heroin smuggled in, refined and dispatched to the US – and the real Popeye Doyle did not stem that flow. This French policier, then, tells a liberally adapted story of the man who did.Jean Dujardin is judge Pierre Michel, who’s taken off his juvenile case work and put in charge of organised crime. Under the French legal system, judges can act like special prosecutors, taking over an investigation and running it alongside the police. Michel’s appointment comes as the drug wars have reached new heights, with assassins boldly picking off officials and increasing quantities of high-quality dope reaching the US. Michel adopts unorthodox and at times illegal tactics in order to break the crime ring led by Gaetan Zampa (Gilles Lellouche), beginning a duel between the two played out in a flurry of just-explained scenes that demand a viewer’s complete attention.Director Cdric Jimenez has clearly studied the Scorsese playbook. There’s much of the same fluidity of storytelling here, the same rich, jewel-like colours, the same glamorous setting and crime-fuelled hedonism. But he isn’t just another wannabe. The film establishes Michel and Zampa as distorted reflections of one another – one the gambling addict, one the family man – and even casts actors who look rather alike. And this film’s sympathies are with the flawed cop rather than the super-gangster, and it’s the authorities who are the focus and not the criminals. It’s closer, then, to a French version of De Palma’s The Untouchables. Here too the authorities know who they’re after, and the problem is finding evidence that will hold up in court. Michel must negotiate the twin dangers of corruption and assassination to get to Zampa and figure out who he can trust even within his own department. Despite moments of personal drama and one clifftop confrontation, the result is a battle of wits played out at one or two removes. Go-betweens bring Michel and Zampa news of the other’s latest tactic, and a flurry of counter-moves are put in motion. There’s so much plot, and plotting, to fit in that this sometimes skims lightly over character drama: Michel’s marital problems and addiction to risk are largely dismissed in a couple of quick scenes. But while this may not have quite the emotional or dramatic heft of Scorsese, Coppola or Friedkin’s finest work in this genre, The Connection offers an intellectually satisfying counterpoint to those stories and, with its sun-soaked Riviera setting, is a gorgeous visual break from the gangster norm.  Follow Helen O’Hara on Twitter: @HelenLOHara  Helen O Hara Helen O’Hara has reviewed films for The Today Programme, the Radio 2 Arts Show, BBC Radio Ulster, Radio 6 Music, Channel 4 news and Empire magazine. Bond king: Stop being ‘cute’ and buying energy stocks – Apr. 8, 2015 Don’t bank on a dramatic comeback for energy stocks. That’s the message from Jeffrey Gundlach, the so-called king of the bond markets. A gigantic supply glut has caused oil prices to tumble to just $52 a barrel today. That’s down a whopping 51% from a June peak of $107. The oil crash has led to disappearing profit margins and job cuts. However, Gundlach noted that the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) exchange-traded fund is down way less than oil. It’s currently off just 20% from its summer high. "The price of energy stocks makes no sense to me. It hasn’t dropped nearly enough," Gundlach said during a webcast on Tuesday evening. Related: U.S. companies kill over 51K oil jobs One of the reasons why energy stocks haven’t crumbled more is the belief in some corners that oil prices will rebound. "Too many people think it’s cute to make a distressed play on energy," said Gundlach, founder of DoubleLine Capital, which has over $63 billion in assets under management. He warned that such a strategy can easily backfire. "Usually the people who buy because they think it’s clever end up selling to other people at a lower price," Gundlach said. Related: Shell inks $70B deal as Big Oil gets even bigger Shale stocks are down more: It’s worth pointing out other, less diversified energy ETFs have fallen more from their peaks. For example, the Market Vectors Oil Services ETF (OIH) has tumbled nearly 40%. Its top holdings include Schlumberger (SLB), Halliburton (HAL) and Baker Hughes (BHI). All three servicing companies have been slammed as operators have halted work to negotiate lower contracts. America’s love affair with British TV – Mar. 12, 2015 American appetite for British television is growing, for everything from quality drama to reality shows. If you watch television in America, you’re probably a fan of British TV — and might not even realize it. U.S. audiences have long enjoyed programs from across the Atlantic. The recent success of "Downton Abbey" and "Sherlock" has only reinforced Britain’s dramatic credentials. But non-scripted shows are quietly generating even more hits for U.K. producers. British TV exports to the U.S. rose 10% to more than $800 million in 2013 14. A good chunk of that figure was for non-scripted programs. The industry makes more money selling lifestyle and reality formats to the U.S. than big budget dramas, according to John McVay, chief executive of U.K. trade group Pact. Related: HBO Now will stream on Apple devices Britain has an impressive history of developing formats that click with viewers. Two of America’s highest profile and longest running reality shows, "American Idol" and "Dancing With The Stars," were based on U.K. programs. McVay said Britain enjoys a reputation as the research and development lab for global TV. That rests on an industry culture that supports the creation of original content. If a show works in Britain, there’s a good chance it will work in the U.S., said Stephen Lambert, who created popular exports such as "Undercover Boss" and "Wife Swap." He’s the chief executive of Studio Lambert, a U.K. production company owned by All3Media. Related: 5 impressive stats about Top Gear The U.K. tends to produce shorter series — often just 6 episodes instead of 26. That means more new programs face the audience test on British screens. American networks can then swoop in and snap up the best performers. "We have a buying community that is very disposed to buying an original idea," Lambert said. "In America it’s much more important that you have a hit, doesn’t matter where it came from." One of Studio Lambert’s latest hits is "Gogglebox," a show that manages to turn people watching TV into … entertaining television. Lambert said part of its appeal lies in making audiences feel they’re part of something happening now — as the big talent quests do. The U.S. pounced on the idea and its version — "The People’s Couch" — has run on Bravo since 2013. Format-based TV isn’t the only British export connecting with American audiences. As the world’s second largest TV producer behind the U.S, the U.K. is one of the biggest winners in the new golden era of television. Global appetite for quality TV, coupled with the growth of new platforms like Netflix (NFLX, Tech30) and Amazon (AMZN, Tech30), is creating a lot of space for British programming. Related: Kate Middleton to visit Downton Abbey’s servants Michele Buck, founder of production company Mammoth Screen, said U.S. interest in British TV has grown in the last few years. Buck, whose credits include "Hornblower" and Benedict Cumberbatch wartime drama "Parade’s End," said the renaissance is being led by award-winning scriptwriters such as Downton’s Julian Fellowes. Downton has made a huge splash in the U.S, collecting a clutch of Emmy’s and proving a ratings smash for PBS. It’s the broadcaster’s top rated drama ever. As drama attracts more global interest, U.K. and U.S. production companies are increasingly working together. Mammoth Screen is working with the Weinstein Company on a detective drama set in ancient Egypt called "Book of the Dead." A tax break for high-end scripted shows produced in the U.K. is also encouraging Americans to shoot in Britain. "Game of Thrones" was one of the beneficiaries. And there’s more British flavor here: Netflix’s smash hit "House of Cards" was based on a U.K. mini series of the same name. And the catch is, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has known about it all along.According to a new study published in the journal Drug Testing and Analysis, of the 21 products tested, half claimed to be manufactured with Acacia rigidula, all of which tested positive for beta-methylphenylethylamine (BMPEA), a chemical only made in labs. "What we know is that in dogs and cats it can increase blood pressure, increase heart rate," Dr. Pieter Cohen, the lead of the study and a Harvard professor, said in an appearance on CBS. "These are things that are signals in humans will lead or turn into heart attacks, strokes and maybe even sudden death." ? Flickr Susy MorrisFDA Approves GMO Apples, Potatoes But Companies Wont Use Them As it’s mission statement, the FDA "is tasked with identifying and removing mislabeled, adulterated, and dangerous dietary supplements from the marketplace. The extent to which the FDA is enforcing the law is not known." Apparently, the FDA failed to do so. "The FDA should immediately warn consumers about BMPEA and take aggressive enforcement action to eliminate BMPEA in dietary supplements," the study stated. "Physicians should remain vigilant for patients presenting with toxicity from sports and weight-loss supplements as they might contain undisclosed stimulants, such as BMPEA." The government agency asserted research on the presence of the chemical in Acacia rigidula was published in 2013, and that BMPEA causes no harm. ? Flickr ZaldyImgExperts Say US Agency Drug Review Proposal Endangers Patients "While our review of the available information on products containing BMPEA does not identify a specific safety concern at this time, the FDA will consider taking regulatory action, as appropriate, to protect consumers," said FDA spokeswoman Juli Putnam. But finding the chemical in the products isn’t the only job of the FDA. The study was conducted to determine whether BMPEA was removed from the supplements. And it wasn’t. Dr. Cohen expressed concern that companies often lace dietary supplements with chemicals that act like amphetamine and then hide them under obscure plant names to make it appear that the ingredients came from natural botanicals. ? AP Photo PRNewsfoto Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals, Inc. According to blogger Josh Long, who covers the legal aspects of the natural supplement industry, the ten supplements found to contain BMPEA are manufactured by one company, Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals. When Long asked the company’s president about the chemical, he maintained that the amphetamine is a naturally occurring alkaloid produced by the plant itself, and thus all products that list it as an active ingredient should contain it, the Daily Beast reported. Law enforcement personnel plan to pursue actions against manufacturers which sell products that do not contain the ingredients listed on the bottle. Among the supplements found to contain BMPEA are JetFuel Superburn, JetFuel T-300, MX-LS7, Aro Black Series Burn, Black Widow, Dexaprine XR, Fastin-XR, Lipodrene Hardcore, Lipodrene Xtreme, Stimerex-ES, and Yellow Scorpion.
